Newmarket Town Under-16s celebrate winning the Suffolk Youth Football League Cup

Newmarket Town Under-16s finished off a season to remember by being crowned Suffolk Youth Football League Cup winners on Sunday.

The unbeaten young Jockeys had already clinched the Division Three title, having collected 34 points from the 36 on offer.

And a 3-2 win over Crane Sports, who play two leagues higher, sealed the team a second piece of silverware.

“It has been a fantastic season,” said coach Kyle Waslin. “We made the move into Division Three not knowing if it was the right move in terms of levels.

“But it has been tough at times and there have been some close games. We never expected to win the cup either because we know a lot of the Cranes players and they are a very strong team.”

Brandon Morris set Newmarket on their way with the game’s opening goal before going on to grab a second soon after.

Jay Mitcham made it 3-0, with Crane pulling a goal back just before the break.

Crane scored another in the second half but Newmarket – thanks in part to some good goalkeeping from Samuel Rudkin – held on.

“We have completely exceeded our expectations,” added Waslin. “When you factor in our U16s EJA team we won one league, finished fourth in another, won two cups and reached another final.”
