Soham Town Rangers manager Robbie Mason full of praise for Cameron Watson and Josh Pope

Soham Town Rangers boss Robbie Mason has praised the ‘massive character’ that his Manager’s Player of the Year Cameron Watson showed during the 2019/20 season.

The defender joined the Greens last summer from lower-league Haverhill Borough and had a tough start to life at Julius Martin Lane.

Indeed, in just the second game of the campaign at home against a Histon – a 3-2 defeat – Watson was substituted at half-time.

However, he soon bounced back with a string of consistent showings either at left-back or centre-back, which convinced Mason he was deserving of the manager’s accolade.

“Cam didn’t start all too good and that is one of the main reasons why he deserved the award,” said Mason.

“He could have sunk after that Histon game. It is never nice being dragged off at half-time and some would have looked for a move there and then.

“But he got his head down, worked even harder and has been superb. We never doubted him because he is the type of lad that wants to learn.

“It is a real credit to him how well he adapted to the step up.

“Having players like Cam is massive for us because we do not have the biggest budget. It means we have to work with the players to help them to improve, and that is all he wants to do.

“He showed massive character and always gave us 100 per cent, whatever the situation.”

Another of the end-of-season trophies went to goalkeeper and captain Josh Pope, who picked up the Players’ Player prize during a virtual awards night last week.

“Popey represents what we are all about,” added Mason. “Everything he does, he does it for the good of the team.

“He looks at everyone, not just himself, and he is great in the changing room with the lads.

“He is probably the best signing that we have made since I have been in charge.

“You put him in the team and you know that he is going to perform every week – that is massive for a manager.

“He had his injury problems last year and that was frustrating for him, but he’s looked after himself and it has paid off.”

Meanwhile, club sponsor Glance Cleaning Services selected leading goalscorer Sam Mulready as their Player of the Season.
