David Wallinger excited for next chapter with new club Mildenhall Fen Tigers
David Wallinger is looking forward to getting the next chapter of his speedway career under way when giving fans of the Mildenhall Fen Tigers their first glimpse of him at the club’s Meet The Riders event, writes Graham Clark.
The former Stoke Potters rider will be one of five new faces, along with the returning Danny Ayres and Sam Bebee, in attendance at the annual pre-season get together at Mildenhall Stadium on Saturday (7pm).
“I’ve always been very impressed how Mildenhall is run and I’ve always said that. There is something about that stadium that feels quite homely,” said Wallinger.
“I am looking forward to meeting the fans as it is okay talking on social media but it will be nice to have a chat and be introduced to them. I’ll be taking a bike down as well so fans can come have a sit on that. I want to try and get off to a good start and this is a great opportunity to do that.”
In an effort to hit the ground running the 34-year-old has made a raft of changes along with ensuring he gets plenty of laps under his belt ahead of the 2019 campaign.
“I’ve changed my engine tuner to Jeff Howarth. He came with me last Saturday to Scunthorpe to test them and I was really happy. In fact I’ve never had such a good ride on a bike,” said Wallinger.
“I’ve got an amateur meeting at Scunthorpe on Sunday, then I’m off to France on Thursday for a few days with Danny King and Tom Bacon, and I’m going to do Ben Barker’s testimonial next month. It’s always good to get extra laps in and mix it with good riders.”
Having been involved in a number of basement battles in recent seasons, the father of two hopes he will be fighting for play-off honours this time round.
“At Buxton and Stoke we never had good enough teams to be up there. A lot of us have still got improvement in us so hopefully we won’t be fighting it out at the bottom, but at the top,” added Wallinger.
