Newmarket trainer Roger Varian strongly denies rumours of corruption within his Bury Road-based yard

Roger Varian has dismissed recent rumours linking former members of staff in his yard with corruption.

It is believed that the Newmarket trainer was contacted last week by a freelance journalist who planned to publish a story alleging that four of the Carlburg Stables team had been sacked for betting on the stables’ horses to lose.

However, Varian, who earned in excess of £2m in prize money last year, has insisted that was not the case.

“I am disappointed that we have reached the point whereby I have had to publicly dispel a rumour which never had a glimmer of truth to it,” he said in a statement.

“As I said, I hope this puts it to bed now and we can look forward to 2019. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my owners for their support and understanding.”
