Newmarket's Ultimate Dodge win a silver and bronze medal at the British Dodgeball Open in Nottingham

Ultimate Dodge made a positive start to 2019 at the weekend, returning from the British Open in Nottingham with a silver and bronze medal.

It was the Newmarket-based club’s under-11s that finished runners-up in their competition, despite having a player less throughout the event due to a late withdrawal because of illness.

Unlike previous tournaments, there was no semi-final or final on this occasion and instead the winner was decided on points after all of the fixtures had been completed.

Ultimate Dodge finished level at the top with Hartlepool Mavericks – a side they drew 6-6 with, but it was County Durham outfit that claimed the top prize thanks to their superior points difference.

Head coach Michael Grant said: “We were a player down so to get a silver is a brilliant achievement. It was five versus six so I could not have asked any more.

“The teams are getting stronger all the time but we showed how much ability and potential we have.

“It was unfortunate to get so close to winning it, but overall it was a positive event.”

Meanwhile, Ultimate Dodge’s under-16 team managed to get their hands on bronze medals, only losing to the two sides that finished above them.

It was a squad that contained two players making their debuts, and Grant was pleased with the display.

“It was a positive start from the team and it was pleasing to see the new players get some experience,” he added.

“The losses we had were relatively narrow and it could have gone either way.

“To get the bronze for all of their efforts was very much deserved.”

* Ultimate Dodge’s Imogen Sharp has been selected for the England Women’s Development squad for 2019.

* The club is welcoming new players to join any of its teams in the under-9, under-11, under-13, under-16 and under-18 age groups.

Training takes place at Newmarket Leisure Centre on Tuesdays and Thursdays, while on Wednesdays it is at the Ellesmere Centre in Stetchworth. For more information visit www.ultimatedodge.co.uk
