Ely skipper targets promotion
After just missing out last season, captain Joel Scott-Paul has revealed that the Ely Tigers are gunning for promotion this time around.
The Tigers finished third in the Greene King League 3 Eastern Counties during 2017/18, with Stowmarket and Southwold the teams that were elevated to a higher level.
However, with those sides now out of the way, Scott-Paul is expecting his men to mount a sustained challenge for the summit ahead of tomorrow night’s opener at West Norfolk.
“The league has been watered down somewhat since we joined it,” he said.
“When we first came into it there was more London sides and every team was decent.
“Since it has changed to the Eastern Counties it feels like the league is split into two.
“Stowmarket and Southwold were in that top bracket with us and now they are gone we have to be aiming for top spot.
“There will be sides challenging us like Thetford, Wymondham and Holt, but we have to be confident.
“It will be a case of taking each game as it comes, but we want to be right up there.”
As one of the favourites for the title, Scott-Paul is well aware that Ely are going to be seen as one of the division’s biggest scalps.
However, having bolstered their front row during the summer with the arrival of former Holt player James Buckland, the skipper is confident there is enough strength in depth to cope with the challenge.
“We had it a little bit last season with teams giving everything to beat us,” he added.
“Teams will try to put one over us and it is down to us to deal with it.
“We lacked a little bit of depth in the front row but that should not be the case now.
“There are few props around these days, but luckily we have managed to boost our numbers during the summer.”
