Newmarket Town make bright start to pre-season friendlies

Newmarket Town have started their pre-season campaign off in positive fashion in recent days.

On Saturday they opened up against Braintree Town and while it ended in a 3-0 defeat, the Jockeys gave a good account of themselves against the National League South visitors (three leagues higher).

Michael Shinn’s team then followed that up on Tuesday with an outing against lower-league Chatteris Town.

And Newmarket were in clinical form on the night, putting their opposition to the sword with eight unanswered goals.

Returning midfielder Ross Paterson and former Cambridge City player Michael King both helped themselves to hat-tricks, while a Jack Watson penalty and a goal from youngster Ben Landshoff completed the scoring.

Landshoff, who was part of the club’s successful Under-16 side last season, only made his first senior appearance during the loss to Braintree.

Newmarket’s friendlies will now continue with back-to-back home games against Isthmian League North Division opposition.

Bury Town will be their visitors tomorrow night, followed by Felixstowe on Tuesday (both 7.45pm).
