QIPCO 2,000 and 1,000 Guineas provisionally scheduled for first weekend of June in British Horseracing Authority's plans for restart
The British Horseracing Authority has revealed that the QIPCO 2,000 and 1,000 Guineas – the first Classics of the season – will potentially run on the first weekend of June as part of plans to restart racing.
The Guineas Festival, hosted at Newmarket's Rowley Mile Racecourse, was originally scheduled to take place this coming weekend, only for the coronavirus pandemic to force a postponement.
However, in the latest update from the governing body, the two showpiece races have now provisionally been scheduled for the weekend of June 6-7.
Newmarket also lost its traditional season-opening Craven Meeting to the health crisis, but the BHA has announced its intention to run the likes of the Craven Stakes and the Nell Gwyn Stakes over May 23-24.
The plans have been described as a 'best-case scenario' – with the green light still required from government and public health authorities.
In addition, it was confirmed that some of the races may not be hosted at their traditional venues.
A BHA statement read: "Under our best-case scenario planning, and subject to advice from public health authorities, the aim is to rescue a number of lost events from the early part of the spring and stage them during the second half of May and early June, if possible.
"It is possible that the races may not be staged at their traditional venues and may need to be hosted at alternative racecourses. Again, this is dependent on wider circumstances, the available fixtures and the public health guidance in place at the time.
"It is also likely that racing will be restricted to domestic runners only, initially at least until May 30, in line with a similar approach taken by other international racing jurisdictions."
