Hart's expected omission opens World Cup door for Pope

Widespread speculation this afternoon has claimed that Joe Hart will not be a part of the England squad for this summer's World Cup, seemingly securing a place on the plane to Russia for Wicken's Nick Pope.

It has been a breakthrough campaign for Pope, who made his Premier League debut for Burnley last September and went on to become statistically one of the division's best goalkeepers.

He was selected by Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate for the recent friendlies with The Netherlands and Italy, but was not given any game time.

Early suggestions were that Southgate would opt for the experience of Hart over Pope, but it is now believed the former West Suffolk College student has won the battle to join Jordan Pickford and Jack Butland as the goalkeeping options.

The former Bury Town and Team Bury goalkeeper, who turned 26 in April, kept 11 clean sheets during his 35 Premier League appearances in 2017/18.

Southgate will confirm his 23-man selection for the competition at a press conference tomorrow.
