Point-to-point returns to East Anglia on Sunday

By Sports Newmarket

Point-to-point horse racing gets under way this weekend at the traditional East Anglian season opener at Cottenham, writes Lauren Braithwaite.

The course will again host the first meeting of the 2018/19 season on Sunday, December 2 (12pm) – before hosting the ever-popular meeting between Christmas and New Year – with plenty of local interest involved.

With the near certainty of decent going, these two fixtures have historically provided two excellent days of racing.

East Anglia’s leading gentleman rider of last season, Badlingham’s Archie Wright, will hope to get his season under way at Cottenham with a new and un-raced recruit to his father Nick Wright’s yard in Durban Thunder.

In A Blue Dust will be another to keep an eye on from the Wright yard, with the belief that we have not yet seen the best of him.

That is despite his impressive win in a Conditions race at Cottenham last year in arguably the training performance of the season as the horse had been off the track since November 2014.

Looking further ahead than the season opener, and trainer James Owen, based in Newmarket, will be another name to keep note of.

The last couple of seasons have seen Owen do well with a small group of horses for owner-rider Tim Gredley (Stetchworth).

Net D’Ecosse, a recent purchase for Gredley, is a good example as he looks to be a good buy and will be one to keep track of as the season progresses.

Organisers hope it will be a successful season with favourable weather conditions to allow fixtures to take place as scheduled.

There will be six scheduled steeplechase races at Cottenham on Sunday, with trade stands, catering outlets and local bookmakers to keep spectators fed and watered between races.

Adult admission is £15 including racecard. Concessions £13. U16s free.
