Newmarket swimmer Laghero earns county accolade

Ignacio Laghero was one of the stand-out performers as Newmarket Swimming Club enjoyed a positive outing during the second round of the County Championships in Ipswich.

Laghero swam to gold in the 50m freestyle, while also clinching bronze in the 50m butterfly — results that saw him crowned Suffolk County champion.

The youngster will be back in action this weekend alongside club-mate Lauren Watt in the freestyle skins in another round of the County Championships, which will once again best hosted by the Ipswich-based Crown Pools.

Watt will head into the event in good form, having won five gold medals during the second round of the competition.

In total, Newmarket entered 35 swimmers across the six events, with a healthy return of medals being won.

Joseph Bavey took gold in the 50m freestyle and butterfly, with Maeve Pooley earning silver and bronze in the freestyle and backstroke — the latter earning her a regional time.

There were also medals for Henry Newell (gold, 50m freestyle), Miriam Stratfold (bronze, 50m breaststroke), Tess Wesley (bronze, 50m backstroke and breaststroke) and Harry Wagner (silver, 100m breaststroke).

Meanwhile, further medals were won in the 200m events by Bavey, Newell, Stratfold, Wesley, Thomas Allison, Romilly Marks and Etholle Marks.

There were also more regional times recorded by Zak Baldwin, Harry Saunders and Pooley.

As well as being represented by Laghero and Watt, Newmarket will also have entrants in the 400m freestyle and relays this weekend.
