Newmarket Rugby Club ready for final first phase encounter at Cottenham Renegades
Head coach Martyn Wall believes that his Newmarket side could not be in better shape heading in to Saturday’s crucial trip to Cottenham Renegades (2pm).
The unbeaten hosts, who defeated Newmarket 29-8 on the opening day, have already secured top spot heading into this final first-phase fixture.
Newmarket, meanwhile, are guaranteed to finish second and will therefore join Cottenham in a second-phase six-team league to decide who will be promoted to London 3 Eastern Counties.
However, while there will be little to play for in terms of league positions at the weekend, Newmarket and Cottenham will take the points accrued in games against each other forward with them into the second part of the campaign.
Wall, who has seen his team chalk up back-to-back wins after the festive break, said: “This is going to be a big test and a good barometer of the progress we have made in recent months.
“Since Christmas we have really developed an attacking style and we are in a good position to take them on.
“They beat us fair and square in the first game, but we were missing six or seven first-team players and we are a different side now.
“Because we lost the first game it is probably fair to say this is a must-win game for us, and that is why I am pleased we go into it in this form.
“Some of the teams could well be going into it with 10 points so we do not want to be playing too much catch up.
“The standard will obviously be higher in the second phase and I am excited to see how we get on.
“We finished third last year but the squad is stronger this time.”
