Newmarket will be top of Eastern Counties League Greene King 1 West on Christmas Day following win over Cantabrigians II
Newmarket will sit three points clear at the top of Eastern Counties League Greene King 1 West on Christmas Day following Saturday’s 52-12 victory at Cantabrigians II.
The leaders got off to a positive start when their leading points scorer this season – Michael Reeves – touched and converted within the opening three minutes.
And it got even better in the 10th minute when Michael Palmer advanced down the wing to dot down, with Reeves missing the only one of his eight conversions in the blustery conditions.
However, with a 12-0 advantage it seemed that Newmarket sat back and the hosts took full advantage, as they ran in two tries and converted one to level up the scoreline.
But with the half-time whistle approaching, Newmarket regained the lead via Harvey Bell’s try, with Reeves sending over the extras to make 19-12 at the break.
Five minutes into the second half Matt Kent – playing in his second match of the season – scored a try, followed by Paul Buckle on the hour mark. Reeves converted both to put Newmarket in control of proceedings.
Reeves was accurate again with the boot after Bell ran in his second try, with tries from Daniele Terzenzi and Ryan Osborne completing the scoring.
Newmarket return to action after the festive period on January 5 with a home encounter against Cambridge III (2pm).
