Newmarket drop to third after heavy defeat away from home

Will Wilson’s 10th goal of the season could not prevent Newmarket’s first team from slipping to a 4-1 defeat at the hands of their Bury St Edmunds counterparts on Saturday.
It proved to be a costly defeat for Newmarket, who drop down a place to third, with Bury replacing them.
They have the chance to bounce back on Saturday with a trip to Sudbury II (2pm).
n Newmarket Men’s III remain in the hunt for promotion from Division 7NE after Saturday’s 2-0 victory at Norwich Dragons VI.
After two matches without a win, goals from Alex Andreou and John Benedikz did the damage for Newmarket, who sit third in the table.
On Saturday they host Watton II (3pm).
n In the East Women’s League Division 2NW, Newmarket I were 1-0 winners over City of Peterborough II.
Grace Evans scored the only goal of the game for The Yellows, who host Cambridge Nomads I on Saturday (12pm).
n Newmarket Ladies II were on the wrong end of a 6-1 scoreline to neighbours Ely City I in Division 3NW on Saturday.
The hosts shipped four goals before the break, during which time Laura Excell also netted a consolation goal.
n In Division 4NW(S), Newmarket Ladies III failed to score for the third game running as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat to Royston II.
Newmarket fell behind early on and spent most of the encounter on the back-foot without really testing the Royston goalkeeper.
On Saturday, the thirds travel to St Neots III (10am).
