Newmarket make positive start
Coach Martyn Wall is hoping Newmarket RUFC can continue their ‘encouraging start’ to the new season when they travel to local rivals Ely II on Saturday (3pm).
The new-look side started life in the Greene King IPA Eastern Counties 1 West last weekend with a commanding 24-7 home triumph at the expense of Cottenham Renegades.
Wall, who was appointed during the summer, was a little bit surprised by the result, but now he is looking for the team to replicate that form going forward.
“We had a game plan and executed it really well,” he said.
“I was a bit surprised because looking at Cottenham’s results last year, and the fact we are a new team, I thought it would be a close game.
“It was a dive into the unknown for us in many ways, but we were on top of our game.
“It was nice to see things we had worked on over the summer come to fruition, with the youngsters also looking comfortable.
“Now, the challenge is to match that sort of performance going forward – Saturday was the benchmark.”
With regard to the Ely clash, Wall added: “There is always a little bit of uncertainty when playing sides like this – will any of their first-team players play?
“But we will go there full of confidence after last weekend.
“There seems to be a bit of a buzz around the club after a good start. We want that to continue.”
