Newmarket Town boss Michael Shinn pleased to have Jon Carver on board

Newmarket Town player-manager Michael Shinn is confident new signing Jon Carver will fit in to what he is trying to achieve at the Tristel Stadium – both on and off the pitch.

The centre-back has agreed to join the Jockeys from fellow Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division side Stanway Rovers, whom he captained during the curtailed 2019/20 campaign.

Standing at 6ft 6ins, Carver is certain to provide a welcome presence in both boxes.

And on top of that, Shinn believes he has added another player with the right character to his dressing room.

“We were keen to bring in another defender because we only had Joe Robinson and James Seymour to play centre-back, and James is actually more naturally a midfielder,” said the boss.

“Last season we were an injury away from having to move players from their more natural positions and we had to do that a few times. The likes of Scott Paterson, Ross Paterson and Ben Robinson all played at the back.

“Jon is going to give us a presence. He’s mobile and a good footballer, but also a good person and that is important.

“We have a good group of lads and so we do not want to bring in players that will affect that negatively. I didn’t know Jon, but after a few conversations you could tell he will fit in.

“We are looking to build a squad that will be able to compete at the level above; that is ultimately where we want to be and Jon can do that.”

With a player of his height, there is likely to be expectation on Carver to weigh in some goals whenever 2020/21 gets under way.

He did just that for Stanway, finding the net on five occasions last term – and Shinn feels set-piece goals are a crucial element to being a successful side.

“Set-piece goals are really important at all levels of football,” he said.

“We are already pretty strong with the likes of James Seymour, Ross Paterson, Scott Paterson and Jack Chandler, but clearly Jon will give us even more power.

“If you look at some of the teams that won this league recently; Histon and Dean Greygoose’s Mildenhall, they were powerful and scored a lot of headed goals.

“Hopefully Jon will help us to get even more from those situations.”

In terms of further additions, with Shinn confident most of last season’s squad will remain in situ, he is not looking for too many more fresh faces.

“We’ve got a lot of options going forward and with Jon coming in, that has boosted us at the back,” added Shinn.

“In midfield we could maybe do with one more. We’ve got myself, Jack Watson and Joe Bennett playing in there, but after that we are moving players out of their natural positions again if we pick up an injury or suspension.

“If we can get someone in that position, that would probably be all we need.”
