The midfielder, who featured once in the Football League for Southend United, spent part of the 2011/12 season on loan with the Greens in the Bostik League North Division.

And, after spells with the likes of AFC Sudbury, Histon, Bishop’s Stortford and Bedford Town, he has agreed a return to Julius Martin Lane on a permanent basis.

It is a capture that has delighted Mason, who has backed Auger to ‘breed confidence’ throughout the team.

“Ryan’s distribution is second to none,” said the player-boss.

“He will give us plenty with set pieces and through balls – pretty much everything he does is faultless.

“He has the ability to pick out the frontman and keep things ticking over.

“Ryan is happy to take the ball in difficult areas of the pitch, even with three or four players on him.

“At times last season we seemed to run out of ideas and Ryan will freshen things up in that respect.

“It will breed confidence throughout the team – the lads know they can trust him.”

Auger impressed during Soham’s first pre-season friendly on Tuesday night when Lee Chaffey and Marcus Hall were on target in a 2-1 win at higher-league St Ives Town.

With a number of players away on holiday, Mason only had a squad of 16, but he was pleased with the performance.

“It was very good. We controlled the majority of the game, looking solid and comfortable,” he added.

“We were missing quite a few, and it is pleasing to know there is still plenty of quality to come back in.

“We did not panic on the ball and only conceded late on because of tired legs.”

Soham also been boosted by the news that Alfie Connor, Ally Conway, Will Gardner, Marcus Hall, Jack Mochalski and Harry Norman have all agreed to re-sign for next term along with manager Mason and his assistant Erkan Okay.

However, last year’s leading goalscorer Craig Gillies will not be returning to the club.

The 14-goal striker, who was on loan at Soham from King’s Lynn Town, has joined Thurlow Nunn League First Division North side March Town United.
