New-look New Astley Boxing Club stable get a chance to show their potential at Saturday's annual show
Head coach Mark O’Reilly is excited to be giving his new-look New Astley Boxing Club stable a chance to show off their potential at Saturday’s annual show.
O’Reilly’s squad has gone under somewhat of a change in recent months, with a number of seasoned fighters having moved on to pastures new.
Those that have come in do not have the same levels of experience, with a couple due to be making their competitive debuts at The Racing Centre.
But that is an exciting prospect for O’Reilly, who is expecting to learn plenty about the boxers at his disposal.
“It is going to be very interesting to see how they get on,” he said.
“We have a very inexperienced crew, some of them are novices and so they are a blank canvas.
“We are rebuilding the team but you can see there is a lot of talent in there, and this is the chance to show people what is going on at the club.
“I have always tried to bring through people at the right time. You never want to just chuck someone in there, they have to be able to do themselves justice.
“Hopefully they will not be fazed – they shouldn’t be because we have had some good preparation.
“All of the bouts are 50/50, so it is going to be about performance – it always is. If they perform well then they will win.
“The night will be a fact-finding mission. We will learn more about each of them individually than we do in the gym.”
One fighter who will not be in action is club star Demie-Jade Resztan due to her ongoing commitments with GB Boxing.
However, the European Championships silver medalist and a bronze-medal winner at the recent AIBA World Boxing Championships will be in attendance on a night that is dedicated to Harry Fussey – a former club member who died in a road crash just outside of Newmarket in September last year.
“Harry boxed for the club and he was a great lad,” added O’Reilly.
“We will be dedicating the night to him and hopefully his family will be coming along to watch all of the action.”
