Moulton pupils shine on national stage
After clinching the Eastern Region title a fortnight ago, Ely and Chesterton United’s Under-11 side were celebrating success on an even bigger stage at the weekend.
The squad, which included Moulton Primary School pupils Jenna Price, Scarlett Courtenay-Barrow, Ruby Hamilton-Cuff and Sarah Figredo, attended the National Cup at Kent’s Bay Arena and returned home victorious.
Among others on their way to glory, Ely and Chesterton managed to get the better of last year’s winners Herne Bay before beating Letchworth 2-0 in the final thanks to goals from Courtenay-Barrow and team-mate Izzy Jansen.
Price, meanwhile, stood firm in defence during what was her first ever outing at the Nationals, with Hamilton-Cuff standing in for regular goalkeeper Keane Savage with distinction.
And that wrapped up a double success for the young team, who also wrapped up the Eastern Region League.
They racked up an impressive total of 17 wins overall, with two of the finest coming during the final two weekends at the expense of second-placed Letchworth.
Courtenay-Barrow finished as the league’s top scorer with a return of 44 goals, while Emily Bolt received the National Ladies’ Development award.
l In other club news, Ely & Chesterton’s Hattie Ford and Amelia Courtenay-Barrow have been selected to represent the England Senior Ladies’ team at this year’s European Championships.
The competition, which will be held in Portugal, takes place between October 7-13.
