The Newmarket Cycling Club time trial league looks set to be a fascinating contest between the two hot favourites; Jon Wilson and Gary Hounsome.
Last week’s event, held over nine miles at Red Lodge, resulted in a dead heat between them, with both riders recording personal bests of 20 minutes and 56 seconds and scoring maximum points as first-claim members.
The competition attracted 29 riders, including several first-timers and was won by Lee Woodcock, with an excellent 20.52.
First lady was the fast-improving Francesca Rust, with a personal best of 23.39.
The next event will be held at Red Lodge, at 6:30pm on Wednesday (April 22).
In open events, Newmarket-based equine vet Matt Smith rode superbly in the Lea Valley Cycle Club 25 mile event, held in a strong and gusty wind on Saturday, winning in a stunning 50mins 20secs over very strong competition from across the country.
Smith’s time was over a minute faster than second-placed Dave McGaw of Cambridge CC (51.43), with Mark Arnold in third place (51.48).
Jon Wilson and Bob Watson represented Newmarket Cycling and Triathlon Club in this event, and Wilson had a very strong ride, despite the conditions, to record a personal best of 57.10, taking a commanding position in the club 25 mile standings, with Watson some way behind in 57.33.
On the same day, Lee Dickinson and Anna Blackwell competed and won the Kings Lynn 2up 25 mile time trial.
On Sunday, Newmarket cyclists took place in an inter-club challenge match between NCTC, Cambridge Triathlon Club and Team Cambridge cycling club, held over 10 miles from Bottisham.
Wilson again demonstrated his class, winning the event in 24.04, with Watson a distant second in 25.14 and Eugene Husband third in 25.35.
The Newmarket team came out on top, well ahead of second-placed Team Cambridge.
