Former Newmarket Joggers member Greg Billington has set his sights on an Olympic medal at this year’s Games in Rio de Janeiro, writes Liam Apicella.
Now 28, the California-based athlete spent much of his childhood in England, living in Six Mile Bottom and attending RAF Lakenheath High School. He won the Newmarket Heath Race as a 16-year-old in 17 minutes 50 seconds and honed his triathlon skills with the Cambridge Triathlon Club and secured his place in the three-man US squad for Brazil last month.
Although Billington will be making his Olympic debut, that has not stopped him from aiming high. “Nobody goes to the Olympics without thinking about medals,” he said.
“Qualifying is certainly an achievement, but once you are there, the competitiveness takes over. The attitude from most people tends to be ‘medal or bust’ and that will be my mind set. It is a pretty exciting way to go into a race and that might help me. Some of the other races, the minor places still mean something, but in the Olympics it is all about making it to the top.”
