One million pounds will be on offer this year for the opening two Classics of the British season as the QIPCO 1000 Guineas and QIPCO 2000 Guineas, contested at Newmarket’s Rowley Mile Racecourse.

The initial two legs in the 2016 QIPCO British Champions Series will each be worth £500,000, representing a £50,000 rise on last year’s value for the QIPCO 2000 Guineas and a massive £90,000 increase for the QIPCO 1000 Guineas.

Both races hold Group One status and are contested over the straight mile of the Newmarket course – the QIPCO 2000 Guineas on Saturday, April 30 and the QIPCO 1000 Guineas on Sunday, May 1.

On the news, Michael Prosser, Head of Racing, Jockey Club Racecourses East Region, said:“2016 will be a landmark year for Newmarket as not only are we celebrating the 350th anniversary of the Home of Horseracing but the QIPCO 1000 and QIPCO 2000 Guineas will run with prize money parity again as well as being the most valuable they have ever been.”
