Soham Sports Centre eased into the next round of the Bobby Jones Cup with a 4-1 win against the Cheveley Road Club.
In a nervous first frame of snooker, Colin Johnson — helped with a 23 break — got the better of Cheveley captain Paul Sharpe 62-39.
David Bentinck found himself on the wrong end of a drubbing as Soham captain Kevin Peacock was in ruthless form, hitting breaks of 32 and 17 to win 100-37.
Ash Gilbert got the vital third point for Soham to put his team through to the next round with an unconvincing win over Paul Bunting 37-26.
Tom Crawford made it 4-0 to the visitors including a 26 break, outpointing Larry Wargen 100-39, but Andy Dawson spoiled the party for Soham grabbing the last frame, hitting two 23 breaks in a slightly one-sided game to win 69-28.
Cambridge Snooker Centre matched the efforts of Soham with a win by the same scoreline over the Mildenhall Social Club.
Chris Merchant secured Cambridge’s first point with a win in the opening snooker frame against Steve Jones Jnr.
Peter Johnson took on Mildenhall captain Richard Lyes in the first billiards game.
Although Lyes gained a good lead and made it to 98, Johnson stole the frame by running out on a 16 break.
Jordan Lemmon clinched the second snooker frame on the colours against Stef Wait.
With Alan Benton unable to play the second billiards match, the frame was conceded to give Cambridge a 4-0 lead.
In the last snooker game of the night Joey Wong took on Mildenhall’s Steve Jones snr, Jones demonstrated that no ball is safe and blasted in a 33 break finishing off Wong in less than 15 minutes to prevent the whitewash.
The New Astley Club were the other first round winners after defeating Cheveley Royal British Legion 4-1.
