A 15 point haul from Mike Reeves helped Newmarket enter the Christmas break in high spirits on Saturday with a bonus point win at Thurston.
Featuring a new backline made-up of seasonal debutants, Joe Parr at fly-half and Luke Minshall at outside centre, Newmarket opened the scoring in the 17th minute through Ben Phipps, though the conversion was missed by Parr.
Thurston reduced the deficit in the 22md minute through a penalty before Daniele Terenzi crossed the line, with Reeves successfully booting over the conversion for the extra points.
Reeves’ kicking boots were used to good effect again shortly before the half-hour mark when slotting home another conversion after Harvey Bell had scored Newmarket’s third try of the match.
Phipps stretched Newmarket’s lead out to 21 points in the 40th minute, with Reeves completing a hat-trick of conversions to put another two points on the board.
The second half was less than two minutes old before Ray Richardson pushed Newmarket past the 30 point barrier with their fifth try of the match, and one of which Reeves slotted from again.
Thurston did score a converted try of their own in the 50th minute, but it was to be a mere consolation.
Having had a fine afternoon with the boot, Reeves touched down for a try of his own, before scoring his fifth conversion of the match.
The Scaltback side’s final try came on the hour mark when Rory Forbes-Lange touched down.
On this occasion, the reliable boot of Reeves went missing with him failing to put away the conversion leaving the final score at 45-10.
