New Astley Amateur Boxing Club are preparing for their biggest show yet to mark their 20th anniversary this weekend.

The club’s head coach Mark O’Reilly is looking forward to celebrating the landmark occasion with a stacked card at The Racing Centre on Saturday.

“Preparation has been good and we’re looking to stage between 19-20 bouts,” said O’Reilly. “It will be our biggest ever show.

“It’s our 20th anniversary, so it’s a big show for us and we hope to have some good support from the local people.

“Hopefully it will be the show that we are hoping it to be.”

Boxing fans will be treated to a showcase of local amateur talent this weekend, with O’Reilly tipping many of them to perform well.

“There are five skills belt fights, where there is no winner, aimed at developing the younger fighters,” said the head coach.

“We’ve also got one of the local lads, Lee Morfey, fighting on top of the bill.”

Morfey grabbed the headlines for the club late last year, claiming the 75kg Under-20 Eastern Counties Championship.

The middleweight then represented New Astley at the England Development Championships in Norwich, losing in the quarter-finals.

A fully licensed bar and food will be available on Saturday, with doors opening at 3pm, ahead of the first fight at 4pm.

Tickets will be available on the door and are priced at £10 (adults) and £5 (under-16s).
