Mixed fortunes for Wallis in All England Cup

Mark Wallis missed out on title joy in the William Hill All-England Cup final but did have some success in Newcastle on Thursday.

In the feature race of the night, the All England Cup final, the Lakenheath handler had his hopes on outsider Swift Whirlwind as he aimed to seal his first success in the competition.

But while his dog started strongly, Swift Whirlwind was slightly unfortunate not to get out ahead of the first tight bend before being crowded out, eventually settling for a fourth place finish, with Farloe Nutter taking the outright honours.

In the Angel Of The North Oaks final Domino Storm broke well but a slight stumble on the run up cost her and she lost her place, turning third down the back straight before making slight inroads on the leaders but not enough as she had to settle for third place.

There was also disappointment in the Great North Run race where Jimmy Nailed On tried came agonisingly close in what was a two dog race from the second bend but he just could not get past the strong Liosgarbh Charl and went down narrowly by three-quarters of a length. However, there was a better outcome in the marathon event as Ribble Atom clinched victory.

Going into the race as a long odds on chance she did not disappoint winning by over five lengths in an impressive 55.83 seconds.

Both Ribble Atom and Jimmy Nailed On now head to Wimbledon on Saturday in the William Hill St Leger along with Ferryforth Fran, Black Francis and Sosaidhs Blue.
