The struggle to find fish was reflected in the meagre weights produced during the final round of Newmarket Angling Club’s qualifying competition for this year’s Garbolino Club Angler event on Sunday.
Plummeting temperatures together with a cold wind had a serious impact on those taking to the banks on the Jay Lake at Rookery Waters, Pidley, with the winner Geoff Arnold finishing first with a 6oz bag made up of a gold fish and 11 perch.
John Millard and Ron Cuthbert tied for second with 4oz, a position that would be enough for Millard to finish second in the overall standings.
Millard and table-topping Kevin Shellie will now go on to represent the club in the feature competition later this year.
Final standings top four: 1 Kevin Shellie 58 points; 2 John Millard 56 points; 3 Geoff Arnold 51 points, 4 Gary Rimmer 50 points.
n Floating lines with small lures have proved to be a successful method for anglers at Blackdyke Trout Fishery.
Several anglers visiting the Hockwold venue over the past seven days have caught double figure bags, while some of the larger fish have made an appearance.
The venue will be staging the first heat of the Airflo Bank Masters on Sunday, February 15. Further details will be announced soon.
