Galileo Gold was narrowly beaten by The Gurkha in the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood this afternoon.

When the two colts clashed at Royal Ascot last month, it was the Galileo Gold and Frankie Dettori combination that came out on top.

However, despite moving to the front over a furlong out, Dettori and his mount were unable to make it back-to-back triumphs on this occasion as the pre-race favourite came through to win by a neck.

Galileo Gold trainer Hugo Palmer told Channel 4 Racing: “This generation is considerably ahead of the generation before them and I dare say there will be more matches to savour.”

The late-chasing Ribchester took third spot.
