The battle for the final team place to represent Newmarket Angling Club in this year Garbolino Club Angler of the Year competition is set to go down to the wire.

Kevin Shellie all but booked his place as one of the two anglers to represent the club in the competition after taking victory in the penultimate match of the club’s points series on Sunday over at Headfen Fishery.

Fishing from peg 48 on Trev’s Lake, Shellie topped the weights with 24lb 2oz, a net which included a 13lb carp.

Neville Nodwell (22lb 4oz) was second and Mark Cross (15lb 4oz) third.

With just one match in the series remaining, Shellie tops the table with 46 points, with John Millard (39) second and Gary Rimmer (37) thir.

The top-three finishers in Newmarket AC’s final match of 2014 — held on Tuesday, December 30, at Jeagor Farm Fishery in Holywell Row — all ended up with double-figure weights.

Taking first with 28lb 9oz was John Bellsure, second was John Millard with 21lb 15oz and third was Bobby Coulson with 17lb 2oz.

Despite the changing weather conditions, fish have been taking well to lures, cats whiskers and yellow dances at Blackdyke Trout Fishery.

On Saturday, regular angler Malcolm Foreman tempted a few on a blood worm buzzer, drifting on the ripple under an indicator.
