Former Newmarket Rugby Club trio Freya Burt, Anna Goddard and Hannah Murphy are set to compete in the Junior Touch Rugby World Cup this weekend.
All three girls came through the club’s junior ranks and have been selected to the England squads, with the competition taking place at Nottingham University on Saturday and Sunday.
Burt and Goddard will be in the girls’ under-18 squad, while Murphy is in the mixed under-18 squad, with all three, who play for Eastern Counties, having taken part in a series of trials during the winter.
Goddard was in the England women’s squad for the senior World Cup, held in Australia earlier this year.
The former Newmarket player is at Hartpury College on the Achieving Academic and Sporting Excellence (AASE) Rugby Programme.
Goddard, who started playing touch rugby four years ago in Cambridge, was in the England under-18s at the European touch tournament in Swansea last year, where they finished runners-up to Wales.
The former Ely College pupil started playing rugby at Ely Rugby Club aged six, before switching to Newmarket at 12 to join their girls’ team.
Burt is on an AASE RFU scholarship at Brockenhurst College in Hampshire, where last season she received the most improved player award.
She plays touch rugby for Oakmedians in Bournemouth and for the Cambridge Touch Association.
Murphy is at Hills Road sixth form college in Cambridge, and also plays for the Cambridge Touch Association.
She recently completed a level one refereeing course for touch rugby.
Burt and Murphy played for the Southern England under-18s mixed touch squad The Mavericks last season, and both were in the Midland Tigers development squad.
