Ely players star for England in international event

Five members of Ely Roller Hockey Club have returned from international duty 
after starring for England 
in the FIRS Ladies Rink Hockey World Championships.

It did not take long before one of the Ely quintet made their mark at the event — held in Tourcoing, France — with Vicky Moffat scoring the first goal of the tournament against South Africa.

Moffatt’s teammate Hattie Ford netted a further two goals in a 5-1 victory.

England found life more difficult against a Chile side containing professional players as the South Americans ran out 12-0 winners.

Despite matching Colombia in their final group game, England suffered a cruel piece of luck when the only strike was a deflected own goal.

Pitted against Switzerland in their last-16 game, England once again failed to find the back of the net in the 4-0 loss — despite both Hannah Barrow and Heather Dunand going close .

Having failed to score in their previous two matches, England ran riot against the USA in the lower-ranking play-off clash.

Taking an early 1-0 lead, Ford doubled the advantage before the break.

Moffatt put away a brace of penalties while both Ford and Barrow added further goals to give Ely players a total of six goals in the game.

In their final game, England lost 10-0 to Spain.
