City of Ely Bowls Club stars Nick Brett and Greg Harlow failed in their bids to win this year’s Just Retirement World Indoor Bowls singles championship.
First to exit the competition was 40-year-old Brett. The Yaxley-based player suffered a tie-break defeat in Friday’s quarter-finals to eventual winner Alex Marshall.
Losing the first set 11-4, Brett hit back by taking the second 14-4 to force the decider.
It was not to be though for the defending Co-operative Funeralcare Scottish International champion with him going down 2-1 to the Scot.
“Outstanding is a word that is overused but I can say that without hesitation that Alex was doubly outstanding,” said Brett.
As for Harlow he breezed into the last four with a convincing straight sets win over defending champion Darren Burnett.
Taking the first set 11-1, the 2010 world champion then repeated the dose in the second set, winning by the same margin.
Harlow, like Brett, came unstuck when meeting Marshall in Saturday’s semi-finals.
Going down 7-6 in the first set, Harlow then lost the second 7-5 to seal his exit from the competition.
