Soham Comrades were 7-3 winners over Impington to get their latest campaign in Division One of the Ely and District League off to a flyer.

Despite a singles maximum for Impington’s Jeff Catlin, Bela Szabo, Mark Lillyman and Kin Choi Chan all claimed two singles wins en route to a 7-3 success in their first game.

However the Comrades were then beaten 9-1 by Soham in their next encounter, as Nathan Stewart and Ian Boggie both recorded maximums and Helen Arnold recorded two good wins.

In Division Two, Comrades II slipped to a 6-4 defeat to Elsworth II, with Martin Logan (two), Martyn Hagon and Janet Nicholls picking up the points in the defeat.

Ely II achieved a 9-1 home victory against Comrades II with Rob Pownall and Neil Abram scoring maximums before combining to win the doubles.

Logan ensured the Comrades avoided the whitewash by beating Ashley Rowe.

Ellesmere II’s Aldo Galea beat Daniel Hearne-Potton to save the whitewash against Fulbourn IV, losing 9-1 in their first game of the season.

In Division Three, Ely IV drew 5-5 with Burwell as Phil Morris scored a maximum to help Ely claim a share of the spoils in their season opener.

Sid Rushton edged a five-set thriller against David Haslam before partnering Morris to win the doubles and secure a 5-5 draw.

Chris Rule and Melissa Rule were the only Comrades III players to turn up for their trip to Ely IV, but a maximum from Rule helped them secure an unlikely 5-5 draw, while Edward Garrett-Jones claimed two wins in Comrades IV’s 7-3 reverse against Burwell.
