Competitive field at trial

The latest round of the Newmarket Cycling Club Midweek Time Trial series attracted a competitive field of riders.

St Ives Cycling Club’s Max Sahota was fastest around the 5.1-mile Fordham circuit, picking up a new personal best with a time of 11 minutes and eight seconds.

Gary Hounsome was the quickest of the Newmarket riders in 11.37 to claim maximum points in the league, with Velopro cyclist Lee Woodcock (11.39) coming in third.

There was a close battle between keen rivals Gordon Irvine and Eugene Husband in the middle of the field, with Irvine (12.29) edging out Husband (12.31) by two seconds.

Francesca Rust recorded an excellent 13.48 on her road bike to win the ladies’ competition ahead of Sophie Lee, who also rode well to gain a new personal best of 14.17.

Elsewhere, Steve Peck continued his good season to complete the Cambridge Cycling Club 10 mile time trial in 23.18.

Bob Watson just missed out on a new personal best in Hull as he finished the Selby Cycling Club 10-mile event in 20.55.

Watson also rode in the Islington Cycling Club 10 mile race, and clocked a time of 21.43.
