Neil Abram completed a clean sweep of the trophies up for grabs at Ely Table Tennis Club’s summer tournament held at the weekend.
Another strong attendance at the club’s day-long event at Prickwillow Village Hall saw players from Ely’s five league teams compete.
The initial two-tier handicap singles competition in the morning helped to even out the range of abilities within the club, and the handicap system provided the lesser experienced players the chance to cause an upset or two.
Abram was a worthy winner of the handicap singles, as he saw off another experienced player in Anne Chambers, to win a closely-contested final.
The doubles competition followed and again proved to be well-balanced by teams of mixed abilities taking part.
Abram partnered up with Karen Byford to beat the team of Greg Ozog and Simon Braschi in the final, winning the decider 11-9 after five hard-fought games.
The new John Dyal commemorative handicap singles trophy was awarded to Abram, as well as the Andrew Maguire Player of the Tournament trophy to cap a clean sweep of trophies for the Ely star.
Club chairman Howard Middleton presented the trophies and said: “This again was a superb event, much appreciated by all the competitors and their supporters.
“Special praise must go to Rob Pownall for organising the handicaps and schedules, and Karen Byford for providing the excellent food.”
Ely welcome any new players for the upcoming season, and practice on Monday evenings with matches played on Wednesdays and Fridays. If interested call Karen Byford on 07831 833775 or email email@example.com
