Former Team GB Olympian David Moorcroft attends Newmarket Joggers' presentation evening
Former Team GB Olympian David Moorcroft was on hand to dish out the awards at the Newmarket Joggers’ annual presentation evening on Saturday.
The middle-distance runner, who represented his country at three Olympics during the 1970s and 1980s, also talked through his career with those in attendance at the event.
Jenny Osbourn and Greg Davis won the women’s and men’s Newmarket Joggers Grand Prix competitions respectively, with Osbourn also receiving a Club Member award.
Neil Pollard was voted Champion Performer of 2018, having achieved the best times in the club for all distances up to half marathon and a close second to Chris Gay in the marathon.
Isabella Soro (Female New Member of the Year), Emma Newman (Female Improver of the Year), Caroline Mcintosh (Female Veteran of the Year), Jan Holmes (Women’s Team Award), Malcolm McConnell (Male New Member of the Year), Chris Gay (Male Improver of the Year), Clive Purbrook (Male Veteran of the Year) and Jim Withers (Men’s Team Award) were also presented with accolades by the two-time Commonwealth Games champion.
Club chair Kate Warboys said: "We were thrilled to welcome David Moorcroft to help us celebrate the end of another successful year for the Joggers. David entertained us with tales about his life at the top of the game, representing GB as an elite runner at the Olympics and smashing 5,000m in 13 minutes through to his recent appointment as Chair of UK Parkrun.
"His key message, following all his experiences connected with the sport, was 'just enjoy your running' no matter what distance or speed you do- experienced or completely new to it, young or old.
"And that really sums us up as Newmarket Joggers and the year we've had. We have the strongest membership we've ever had of 190, 88 men and 102 women. We pride ourselves on being welcoming and inclusive to all members, supporting a wide range of abilities and motivations for running.
"We have also demonstrated that we more than hold our our at various league races through the summer and winter with members feeling able to participate as either a competitor or supporter."
