Mildenhall Fen Tigers sign Kyle Hughes
Mildenhall Fen Tigers have moved swiftly to replace injured heat leader Connor Mountain by signing a familiar face in Bury St Edmunds-based rider Kyle Hughes.
Many Mildenhall supporters will remember Hughes as a raw, exciting 15-year-old back in 2004 when he first started his speedway career.
Hughes, himself, has just recovered from a bad injury after breaking his leg when making his debut for Eastbourne in March.
On Hughes, Mildenhall chairman Kevin Jolly said: ““Obviously this was a move made in circumstances I hoped we would never have to make, but Kyle will be a good fit for us.
“He rides Mildenhall well is a true header at this level, as Connor is, and is popular in the pits and will slot easily into the team ethic at Mildenhall.
“Other teams were showing an interest in Kyle but he has agreed agreed to come to us and he cannot wait to make his debut for us.
“He will take his place in the team for the National League fixture against Kent on August 7.”
Jolly was clearly shaken by the injury to Mountain, who broke his vertebrae during the Fen Tigers’ 59-31 defeat at National League leaders Birmingham.
“This has hit everyone at the club hard,” said Jolly.
“Connor is extremely popular around Mildenhall speedway, is an outstanding young man and our thoughts are with him at this time.
“He was enjoying another highly-successful season and in my mind was ready to take a full time Premier League place when he has suddenly been stopped in his tracks.
“We will be saying to him take as long as you need to get 100 per cent fit and well before he considers returning.
“He does have time on his side and hopefully he can return next season and carry on where he left off this one before this crash.
“This sort of thing knocks you for six when you work so closely with the lads, but as they say the show must go on.”
