Manager sets his Ely players 50-point target

Haverhill Rovers 0
Ely City 2
After winning on the road at nine-man Haverhill Rovers on Friday night, Brady Stone has challenged his Ely City players to reach the 50-point mark before the end of the season, writes Liam Apicella.
By Stone’s own admission, at the start of the campaign he and assistant Martin Grey would have settled for reaching 40 points and survival upon their return to the Premier Division.
Yet, The Robins will almost certainly surpass that target, with the win at Haverhill moving them on to 37 points with 27 more still to play for.
As a result, Stone has been forced into a rethink.
“Martin and I sat down at the start of the season and thought 40 points was achievable. We did not tell the lads, it was a target we kept between ourselves,” he said.
“But the lads have been great and have got better as the season has gone on.
“Fifty points is now the challenge and it is do-able. It is four wins and a draw away, which we can achieve if we keep up the performance levels.”
The win over Haverhill, who had two players red-carded before Ely broke the deadlock in the second half, came courtesy of goals from Alex Theobald and Kelvin Enaro.
Theobald — Ely’s leading goalscorer this term — kept his cool from the penalty spot, while winger Enaro slotted home in the closing stages of the encounter.
The win was Ely’s 10th of the season, which is twice as many as they managed to record during their previous season in the Premier Division in 2014/15.
n Ely continued their positive form by claiming a 3-3 draw at Kirkley & Pakefield on Tuesday night.
The visitors found themselves behind on three separate occasions, but goals from Nathan Littlefair, Kelvin Enaro and Theobald salvaged a point.
n On Saturday, Ely will play host to Hadleigh United at The Unwin Ground.
The visiting Brettsiders will make the trip sitting just one point and place outside of the bottom three.
