The Links Golf Club in Newmarket celebrate victory in the Annodata UK Golf Club Classic
A team from The Links in Newmarket are currently basking in the glory of having secured one of the club’s biggest ever achievements.
After winning through six rounds of the Annodata UK Golf Club Classic throughout the year, captain Sarah Greenall, along with fellow members Edie Douglas, Naomi Pilmer, Marcella Tuttle and Carol Wigham, flew to a rainy Jerez, Spain, to contest the last two rounds.
Almost 300 clubs from England, Spain and Wales entered the competition, but after 3-2 win over Ferndown in the semi-finals, The Links held their nerves in the final, triumphing by a 4-1 margin Glenbervie to get their hands on the main prize.
Reflecting on the enormity of the achievement, skipper Greenall said: “We are all chuffed to bits.
“It is the sort of thing you hope will happen but deep down you never expect it to come off.
“We have battled away through so many rounds and in a way it was prize enough to get to Spain, but to then play so well and win there was the icing on the cake.
“At club level it is probably the top achievement because we have never had a team go this far in a nationwide competition – not even to the semi-finals.
“When you consider it has never been done, and the number of clubs involved from three countries, it is an amazing feeling.”
While the five players in action in Jerez completed the job, overall a total of 11 golfers represented the club over the course of the tournament.
And it is the close harmony that exists among the squad that Greenall believes was a key factor in their victory.
“We are all good friends and offer a lot of support to each other,” she added.
“I am so proud and it was actually quite emotional after we won. There were a few tears, but more in disbelief at what we had achieved.”
