Newmarket's first team lose East Men's League encounter against Harleston Magpies thirds by narrow margin

By Sports Newmarket

Newmarket I slipped to a late 3-2 defeat at the hands of Harleston Magpies III in the East Men’s League Division 3NE.

Hosting Newmarket started the brighter of the two teams and it was only a save from their former goalkeeper – Chris Routs – that prevented them from taking the lead inside the opening 10 minutes.

Ollie Wade was the player denied as his low drag flick was turned to safety.

However, Newmarket did eventually break the deadlock when a swift counter-attack ended with Michael Skelton turning in Rob Green’s low delivery at the back post.

The visitors responded positively and they were only behind for five minutes when Newmarket goalkeeper Iain Robinson was wrong footed in his bid to thwart an equaliser, while moments later the hosts’ Jordan Newnes had to be alert to clear the ball off the line.

Up the other end Newmarket’s Simon Donald was denied in a one-on-one situation, but Newmarket did manage to take the lead into the break via captain Will Wilson’s penalty flick.

Robinson was called into action twice early on in the second half to keep Newmarket in front, although the home side also had chances of their own to extend the lead, one of which was turned wide by Green.

As the half wore on Magpies started to exert more pressure and it finally told with a second equaliser from the top of the D.

And just when it seemed that Newmarket were going to hold out for their second draw of the season, Harleston struck again from a short corner in the dying embers to collect all three points.

Second-from-bottom Newmarket will look to bounce back away at UEA I on Saturday (2.30pm).

* East Women’s League Division 4NW(S) leaders Cambridge South II proved too strong for Newmarket II on Saturday as they recorded a 3-1 win.

The well-organised visitors were on the front foot from the start, pushing Newmarket back, which allowed them to race into a two-goal lead.

To Newmarket’s credit, they stuck to the task at hand and were rewarded when a cross from Robyn Henry-Jones was swept home by Georgia Atherton.

However, any hopes of a comeback were ended by Cambridge’s third goal following a scramble.

The defeat – Newmarket’s second of the season – has left them fifth ahead of Saturday’ trip to Sudbury II (11am).

Newmarket and Sudbury are locked on 12 points, with the latter boasting a superior goal difference.
