Newmarket Ladies II hockey team record home victory over Haverhill in the East Women's League
Newmarket Ladies II moved up to second in the East Women’s League Division 4NW(S) thanks to Saturday’s 2-0 win at their Haverhill counterparts.
The visitors were dominant from the off, with their accurate passing keeping them in complete control of proceedings.
However, despite all of the pressure, they only had one goal to show for their efforts at half-time thanks to a stubborn performance from the Haverhill goalkeeper.
The goal in question came from a left-sided attack which was backed up by Charlotte Abbersteen, who drew the entire defence to the right and tucked the ball across the D for a signature Hannah Fox sweep goal.
The experienced hosts posed more of a threat in the second half, calling the Newmarket defence into action on numerous occasions.
It was not all one-way traffic, though, with the away team forcing a number of short corners, although they were unable to convert any of them.
Newmarket’s second goal eventually arrived when captain Zoe Bailey started off a move that Haverhill attempted on numerous occasions to halt.
The ball was eventually worked to Emma Russell-Price, who in turn laid a perfectly-weighted pass into the path of Georgia Atherton to deftly touch the ball beyond the reach of the goalkeeper and seal the points.
The third victory has left Newmarket three points behind league-leading Cambridge South II, who have played a game more.
The team are due to return to home comforts on Saturday when St Ives III (9th) will be the visitors to Newmarket Leisure Centre (1.30pm).
