King's Ely athletes in top form

By Sports Newmarket

Students at King’s Ely have displayed their athletics prowess this month with a number of medal-winning performances at various events.

Pupils at both King’s Junior and King’s Senior battled it out in the Isle of Ely District Athletics Champions on May 22, during which they were crowned champions.

The team combined to win 22 gold medals, 15 silvers and 15 bronze medals, giving them an unassailable lead at the top of the standings.

That success came hot on the heels of the County Club’s Athletics Championships in Peterborough, where King’s Ely’s Ben Marshall won golds in the triple jump and 110m hurdles.

Meanwhile, Katie Cameron (high jump) and Billy McGrath (discus) collected silvers, with Thomas Bateman and Connor Marshall setting new personal bests in the triple jump and 300m respectively.

At the Cornwell Shield Athletics competition on May 18, the school’s impressive trio of Jack Hammond (300m), Quentin Mitchell (200m) and Freddie Nerarny (long jump) were all victorious in their disciplines.

On the same day, a total of 19 King’s students qualified for next month’s National Prep School Athletics Championships with their performances in the Eight Schools Athletics Meet at Gresham School in Norfolk.
