Gray's century beats Burwell & Exning
Burwell & Exning (215) slipped to an 83-run defeat at home to Swardeston (298-8) in the Gibbs Denley East Anglian Premier League on Saturday.
Batting first, much of the visitors’ innings centred around the performance of Stephen Gray.
The number three batsman scored 114 runs – 14 fours and three sixes – from just 108 deliveries.
Callum Taylor also helped the scoring along with a knock of 64, while Andrew Bramley (3-64) was the pick of the Burwell & Exning bowlers.
In reply, the home team lost wickets too frequently to stand any chance of successfully chasing down their target.
Several batsmen made good starts, but only wicket-keeper Paul Summerskill (56) went on to make a decent score as the team fell well short in their pursuit.
Next on the agenda for sixth-placed Burwell & Exning is a short trip down the road to Mildenhall on Saturday (11am).
* Ahead of that encounter, Mildenhall (234-9) returned to winning ways after the previous week’s shock defeat to Bury St Edmunds by beating Copdock (206-8) by 28 runs.
After winning the toss and opting to bat first, it was former captain Ben Shepperson who once again produced the goods for visiting Mildenhall.
He top-scored with 60, while Nick Maiolo (31) and Jack Loveday (3) also made useful contributions.
Shepperson followed up his performance with the bat by going on to impress with the ball, recording figures of 2-32 as Mildenhall mounted a successful defence, with Tristan Blackledge (3-48) also making a key impact.
