John Gosden's Cambridgeshire winner Wissahickon is favourite for the Betway Winter Derby Trial at Lingfield Park
John Gosden’s Wissahickon is set to take up the role of favourite for Saturday’s Betway Winter Derby Trial at Lingfield Park.
The four-year-old was last seen beating the Michael Appleby-trained Big Country at the same track in December, before which he triumphed comfortably in the Cambridge Stakes at Newmarket’s Rowley Mile.
Owned and bred by George Strawbridge, the son of Tapit has won six of his eight starts and is four from five on All-Weather surfaces.
Strawbridge and Newmarket trainer Gosden also combined 12 months ago to win the same race with Utmost.
Gosden could also be represented by 5/1 shot Court House, who won a 12-furlong conditions event at Lingfield Park earlier this month.
Another HQ-based horse regarded to be among the frontrunners by the bookmakers is David Elsworth’s Dash Of Spice (9/2).
The five-year-old goes into the contest on the back of an impressive 2018 campaign on the turf, which included victories at Epsom and the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes at Ascot.
Further Newmarket interest will come from Stuart Williams’ in-form Pactolus.
The eight-year-old veteran has won on his last appearances, the most recent of which – at Lingfield – saw him defy top-weight in a 10-furlong handicap. Charlie Fellowes’ Chiefofchiefs should also feature.
