Former captains first to tee off at the Links Golf Club in Newmarket

The Links Golf Club in Newmarket today reopened the course following a seven-week closure due to government restrictions imposed in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

First on the tee, at 7am, were Kevin and Di McDonnell. Both are former captains of the club and Kevin was celebrating his 70th birthday with this early morning round.

Kevin commented: “It was a bit chilly at that time of the morning but it was a pleasure to be out here again. The course looks beautiful."

Various measures have been introduced at the club to ensure maximum safety for all members, staff and volunteers. A tee time booking system has been introduced at the club for the first time to avoid large groups of players waiting to tee off developing.

Play is only in pairs and two-metre social distancing is a must. Preparations on the course have ensured that golfers do not need to touch anything except their own equipment.

Club chairman Phil Neal said: “Many people have been working tirelessly over the last few days to make this possible and it is so great to see the course open again as a result.”
