A goal in each half of extra time were enough to spare Newmarket Town Blue Under-16s’ blushes in their Brenda Ince Memorial Cup clash as they eventually overcame a very resilient and well-organised Milton Colts 3-1 .
A defensive mix-up allowed Colts to take the lead midway through the first half, which they stoutly defended until Jordan Foster equalised early in the second.
One-way traffic was punctuated by the rare Milton counter-attack with both sides hitting the woodwork, but the Milton defence stood firm to take the tie into extra-time, where Thomas Knowles and a second from Foster saw Newmarket through to the quarter-finals to face Cambridge City.
Eleanor McLeish rewarded a spirited Newmarket Town Under-12s Girls with a second-half strike to plunder a share of the spoils at Cambridge City Blacks.
Connie Powell put the visitors into the lead through her first goal of the season, before City struck twice before half-time to give them a 2-1 advantage at the break.
Town came out fighting in the second half and great link-up play was rewarded when McLeish saw a great cross fumbled into the back of the net by the City keeper.
