Ely City tightened their grip on second spot in the Thurlow Nunn League Division One thanks to a 5-1 victory away at Dereham Town Reserves on Saturday,

The two sides headed into the break at Aldiss Park level at one goal apiece, but four goals in the final 26 minutes secured a comprehensive win for Brady Stone’s visitors.

Having had to weather some early pressure from the home team, Ely broke the deadlock in 12th minute when 17-year-old Lewis Hook slotted in his first senior goal for the club.

The Robins went on to dominate the remainder of the half, only to be pegged back with 24 minutes on the clock as Ryan Fuller beat Ely goalkeeper Harry Reynolds with a rising effort.

However, Ely regained the lead in the 64th minute through a Sam Goodge header and that advantage was then extended further 12 minutes from time courtesy of Matty Simpson.

Luke Mansfield added a fourth goal shortly after his introduction as a substitute, with the scoring being concluded in the final minute by Goodge from the penalty spot.

The win has seen Ely extend their lead over third-placed Great Yarmouth Town to four points, albeit having played three more games than the Norfolk outfit.

n Ely will go in search of a fifth victory in a row on Saturday (3pm) when they play host to Stowmarket Town at the Unwin Ground in the quarter-final of the First Division Knockout Cup.

Visiting Stow have not played since recording a 2-0 win over Debenham LC on Boxing Day.
