Soham Town Rangers 1

Two deflected goals gave AFC Hornchurch a narrow 2-1 home win against Soham Town Rangers, as the Urchins climbed to second in the table.

Following back-to-back home draws against Cheshunt and Thamesmead Town, the Greens made one change to the side as George Darling returned to the starting line-up, while Jordan Gent made his 150th appearance for the club.

Hornchurch made the perfect start to the game, opening the scoring after five minutes when George Purcell’s free-kick deflected off the end of the Soham wall, wrong footing George Lawton to find the net.

As the half progressed, Soham started to become the stronger side and deservedly equalised in the 33rd minute when Craig Hammond followed up to volley in his first goal for the club.

The Urchins made the better start to the second half as Purcell put an early effort across the face of goal.

Leon McKenzie fired low and hard at Lawton on the hour, before the keeper made a one handed save to keep out Purcell’s shot shortly after.

Midway through the half, the Urchins scored what turned out to be the winning goal when the ball was played across the box left to right, where Junior Luke had advanced forward, with his shot deflecting off a visiting defender and up and over Lawton into the goal.

Soham (16th) look to get back to winning ways when they host play-off chasing Brightlingsea Regent (seventh) on Saturday (3pm).
