Luke Butcher struck late on to earn Mildenhall Town a point from their home clash with Stanway Rovers on Saturday.

Just seven days after being sent off in the 2-1 loss at Saffron Walden Town, the defender scored in the final minutes to salvage Mildenhall a 1-1 draw against their promotion-chasing opponents.

It appeared that Dean Greygoose’s men were heading for a third consecutive league defeat thanks to what appeared to be an own goal from Jacob Brown, but Butcher was on hand to ensure the spoils were shared at Recreation Way.

Ben Newson was a threat to the Mildenhall defence and it was no surprise when he played a key role in the goal that broke the deadlock in the 42nd minute.

The Rovers winger’s low cross skidded across the face of goal, and it seemed that Brown turned the ball into his own net while under pressure.

Mildenhall grabbed an equaliser four minutes from time when an unmarked Matt Green saw his header pushed out by Nick Punter, with Butcher reacting quickest to bundle the ball over the line.

Hall (eighth) visit relegation-threatened Walsham-le-Willows on Saturday (3pm).
