Newmarket Hockey Club's Men's first team lose to Ipswich & East Suffolk in East Men's League

Newmarket first team slipped to their fourth defeat of the season, going down 2-1 at Ipswich & East Suffolk III in the East Men’s League Division 3NE on Saturday.

There was little to split the two sides during an even opening 20 minutes before the hosts broke the deadlock following a missed interception by Newmarket centre-back Jordan Newnes.

And a second I-ES goal soon followed, this time from a short corner which ended up in the roof of the net.

However, with the interval fast approaching the visitors got themselves back into the game when Ollie Wade beat two players and then cut the ball back for Rory Podd, who applied the finishing touch.

Newmarket dominated much of the second half, but despite creating a host of chances, an equalising goal eluded them.

Matt Holden, Mike Skelton and Podd were among those that had opportunities, yet the away side had to settle for their fourth defeat of the campaign.

Second-from-bottom Newmarket will aim to secure their first victory since September 29 when they play host to fourth-placed Harleston Magpies III on Saturday(3pm).

* In Division 4NW(S), Newmarket Ladies II fell to their first defeat of the season as they were beaten 5-1 on the road at Cambridge City V.

The depleted visitors fell behind after just five minutes, but they drew level when captain Zoe Bailey turned the ball in from a cross.

However, it proved to be somewhat of a false dawn, with the home team going on to take control of proceedings with four further goals.

The second side, who currently sit fourth in the standings, have a tough-looking assignment on their hands on Saturday when they welcome league-leading Cambridge South II (1.30pm).
